COUNTRY CHURCH OF SAINT VARNAVAS

Outside of the village and as you go north you will meet the cave of saint Varnavas where he led an ascetic’s life and where his remains were found. Next to this cave there is his chapel. It is small, made of stone and of monoklyte type. Internally we will meet the woodcut iconostasis framed from portable icons, the few stools in which people sit during the Holy Service as well as the wooden psalm books which are not omitted.

The Holy skull of Saint Varnavas, as well as part of his remainders, is in the main church of the village of the Evangelism. The holy icon of Saint Varnavas (15th century) and the doors of the beautiful gate, from the old underground temple are protected in the ecclesiastical museum of the community.

It functions twice a year: The Easter Tuesday and on the 11 June when it is the day of Saint Varnavas.During this day his remainders are transferred to the chapel for a litany and worship from the people.
